Ceremonies, part one

Dr. Leon Martin de Liège

Otherwise known as Ben’s father.

Ben’s father’s funeral was last week.  It’s been a sad time, but the ceremony was a true celebration of his life.  They packed the seats of the church in Fontin and we listened to music he loved and stories of his life from family and friends.

English didn’t come easy to him so when he wanted to speak it, he carefully composed the sentence in his head to make sure the proper words and tenses were chosen.  One of his most often used phrases usually came out at the end of a long meal.  Loudly, he would proclaim to the table, “My daughter-in-law would like dessert!”  We shared a love of all things sweet.

I could never call him by his first name, but Dr. Martin seemed so formal, so I was very glad when we had kids and he became Bonpapa.
